Recent heavy snow and rain accompanied by unseasonal warm temperatures have combined to raise water levels in both the already-saturated Nooksack and Sumas river basins. Flooding along the Nooksack has thus far been limited to isolated low-lying areas and roads but flood warnings remain in place in anticipation of more rainfall this week, and some roads remain impassable. Farms on the Sumas Prairie near Abbotsford have been hit by flooding.
Some Whatcom County routes, including Ferndale’s Bennett and Paradise roads, were closed as of Monday evening due to water over the roadway.
The Nooksack River’s rise led to moderate flooding Monday in areas surrounding Ferndale, including under the I-5 bridge.
Slater Road remained closed late Monday due to flooding several miles from the Silver Reef Casino near Ferndale.
Bellingham’s Whatcom Falls is running strong after an atmospheric river hit Whatcom County over the weekend. More rain is expected into Wednesday.
