On the first warm day of spring, I pack my car and drive to the orchard.

It’s too early for apple blossoms, but underneath the trees I find small purple flowers pushing through the dead grasses of winter. Alone and in bunches, they dot the dry hillside with splashes of color. My boyfriend lays down in the sun, unbuttoning his coat and closing his eyes. The beautiful and temporary nature of the moment hits me, and I set up my easel to paint the scene.

A few weeks later, I return and find those purple flowers have disappeared, and a few of the apple trees have sprouted small green leaves. I set up my easel again.
